Hating Bella

Bella Swan New MoonTwilighters freak out with joy, passion, and love when the name of Robert Pattinson or Edward Cullen is mentioned in any setting. Proclamations of love spew forth and wishful day dreaming instantly begins. Only a few brave people will say the name of Kristen Stewart or Bella Swan knowing the pending doom, wrath, and harsh words to come. Wait a second. Doesn't something sound a little wrong here?

While the vast majority of Twis are female, there are quite a few guy fans out there as well. So it seems odd that only Edward Cullen and Robert Pattinson get gushed over. But then again, girls can be more vocal...just ask the girl sitting next to you or the next one that you see walking down the hall. So if we assume that only the girls are speaking up-what is it that is making them scream curses upon Kristen Stewart and Bella Swan?

99.9% of the positive feedback on these two characters is for Pattinson and Cullen. "So freakin hott," "a stud," "auh-mazing actor" and the like adorn comments, posts, and statuses regarding the character of Edward Cullen and the portray-er, RPattz. The other 0.1% show up in the form of "She did an okay job as Bella" and "I like her other movies" on pages about Stewart and Bella Swan. Why is the ratio so unfavorable to one party and completely favorable to the other?

In all honesty this ratio should be 50/50. Let me explain:

Girls will be drawn to Edward/Robert due to his like able charm, good looks, and gentlemanly ways. While he may not be the Brad Pitt or Eric Bana that sweeps all women off of their feet, he can carry his own weight. He is suppose to be a vampire-girls are always drawn to things and people that are mysterious to them and present a new challenge . Enter the vampire. The underlying tones of Edward Cullen during the Twilight Saga is his internal gentlemanly ways from the early 1900's. Few girls even recognize what they are really picking up as they swoon over Robert, but yes, admit it. You are liking the old styled gentleman. So lets give Robert Pattinson and his vampire character, Edward Cullen, 50% of the love.
Bella Swan New Moon
Bella Swan. Okay, girls, don't you want to BE her? If she is the one who gets this really great guy, wouldn't you want to be imitating her? Not hating her? Just a suggestion. Typically when you see someone achieving the same aspirations you want to achieve (like guys, a job, or grades) you emulate them so that you can get the same results. So, step up to the plate. Who will go first and admit that hate mail, comments, posts, and etc. are not achieving bringing you more happiness. You are not really dissatisfied with how Kristen Stewart played Bella, you just wish you were exactly like her and got the fictional guy...err, vampire. So where is her 50% of the love? Where are her "you are so gorgeous!," "how do you do your hair?," "can you teach me to be smart like you?," and all the other questions that would help girls emulate her to reach the same goals and achievements? Just saying...

So next time you go to write a hate comment just because you can't be like them-get a grip, admit that you are really trying to puff yourself up, and try being positive. Share the love. And stop hating Bella.

  1. I really kind of just want that dress that she's wearing (and kind of wonder if she taped her boobz in place.)

  2. she is an amazing actress and super lucky to get edward.
    i dont hate her.

  3. Kristen did an amazing job as Bella, and I thought she was SO HOT from the first time I saw her in the movie, If I were bisexual I would rather pick Kristen/Bella before Robert/Edward .. But I'm not. They're both really hot - and I truly can't understand those people who says they "hate" Kristen, It's "only" a movie/book series. (The greatest ever, but anyway)

  4. i absolutely love kstew she is so hot im jealous and rob is gorgeous, well that is an understatement. they both are awesome.

  5. I like her. Usually its the people who forget that this character is fantasy not real. Who WOULDN'T want to be her. HELLO HUNKY VAMPIRE!!!! And Kristen is a beautiful actress!!!

  6. I don't hate Bella in any way, I think she did an excellent job in the first movie. I look forward to seeing her in New Moon at the end of the year. To anyone who hates her just remember, Edward without Bella is like Tom without Jerry - it just doesn't work.

  7. She is great Bella/Kristen ...while reading the books i could have hated her a little because of her ridiculous liking for Jacob but at the end everything is perfect...I think Kristen did an amazing job and she`s gonna improve with the rest of the saga

  8. hrm.. well, for one, i think pattinson is hot, sure, and edward is charming, and tyler is a cutie, etc.. but i'm not a raving fangirl. that said, i think stewart was a mediocre actress in twilight (i have not seen her in other movies, so i can't attest to her abilities beyond this film). she hardly expressed any emotion (save perhaps in the truck after the james encounter.. and in the hospital at the end.. and her acting was relatively unimpressive in both), and for most of the movie she had this glazed over look on her face, or she looked bored.. which i'm on the fence about. on the one hand, she was supposed to look overwhelmed by his presence etc, which could translate into a spacey expression, but i don't think she pulled it off effectively. it just looked like she didn't have any other expressions. to be fair, i wasn't that impressed with robert's acting for some of the movie either... i think the rest of the cast was great, for the record. probably, these faults stem from inexperience, and maybe she'll perform better in the future... hard to say. secondly, besides having a gorgeous old fasioned vampire in love with her (stalking her, really... realistically, who wouldn't file a restraining order against someone breaking into their bedroom to watch them sleep and following them on their day trips to neighboring towns?), what's there to be envious about bella? she's very average, at least, that's what she would have you believe (and much of the reason everyone else is nuts about her may have a lot to do with the fact that she is a novelty in their small boring town), doesn't have any special talents or abilities, doesn't even demonstrate any exceptional personality traits - besides cooking for her father, she's not particularly sweet, or generous, or compassionate, she's an average student, etc... the primary reason edward fell in love with her is chemisty, not personality. anyway, i'm interested in seeing how they both act in other projects, and how they'll fare in the movies to come.... but that's why i'm not crazy about bella/kristen :)

  9. She did the role justice, and it was hard enough to act with the terrible screenplay/writing that was, Twilight. The only thing good about Twilight was the story. 400 glowers, grimaces, and acid-in-mouth's aside it's only the story and it's smart conflict that keep the novels afloat.

  10. I agree. no one ever says anything good about anyone else apart from "Omigosh, Edward Cullen is so FIT!".
Tbh, i prefer Jackson Rathbone (Jasper), He is well sweet and his facial expressions are priceless (:
I prefer Edward to Bella though, SORRY. But i have a thing about vampires, not because of what he looks like.

  11. At first I didn't like Bella, found her to be mediocre at best - however she's grown on me. Her "girl next door" looks are a great balance to Edward's "perfection." I really believe Kristen did a great job in the role, after reading the first and second books. She was supposed to be aloof and detached. She had no connection to forks or really anyone there. Even Charlie was distant at first. I would love to see Kristen and Robert in other films; I'm sure they are great!

  14. i personally hate her and dont think there is anything special about her cuz she's ugly and im not jealous of bella cuz she's a fictional character and im not jealous of kristen cuz i could act way better than her and look better than her and she is only an actress cuz her parents are in the film industry, there is nthing special about her. back to bella, she is average, no personality, no good looks, nothing attrative at all, maybe except blood to edward. why would i want to live lie bella in the first or second book? its terrible, i hate rain as much as her and i could never live in forks, even if edward was there...

    She made Bella more believe-able.
u no in the book, Bella is clumsy & ackward around Edward [hottie], she is strange with him & stuff.
    i seriously don't get u ppl!

  17. Kristen Stewart is very beautiful. And I like her as Bella. But I wouldn't want to be just like her. I'd rather be like Alice. She is my favorite. And she has the better looking mate. lol

  18. Kristen Stewart is very beautiful. She should be a model...not an actress. I am not and never have been impressed with her acting. I'm not saying that she could never be. With some more training under her belt I think she could be fabulous. She has this amazing look for Bella. At first I thought she was too pretty for Bella. When watching Twilight, yes, she looks like her and is awkward like Bella. But her face lacks emotion. Her eyes never seem to be focused. Except for in the James scene she had emotion but even then her scream sounded like she had to work too hard at it. I do not hate her...anymore. At first I was furious at her btu then I realized it was the script writing I hated more. But the more I watch her, the more I like her as an average actress and I think she can be better with more experience and training.

  19. I love some things about Kristen as Bella, and I don't like others. For instance, I think her looks are perfect for the character. I always imagined Bella as someone who was pretty but not so insanely beautiful that you're like, "What's she doing walking around avstaterage high school?" You know, like girl next door pretty. But there were some scenes that I thought she was way too serious. In the books her character is a little more lighthearted (that goes for Edward too in some scenes, though, so there's still 50/50 love!).

There were times in the books that I couldn't stand Bella, though. She's so darn wishy-washy and keeps swapping out her guys! It makes you wonder why either Edward or Jacob would put up w/ it. But, Kristen made Bella seem stronger in the movies, and I hope it carries over and eliminate some of the wishy-washiness.

  20. I LOVE and admire them both equally. They are the perfect Ed and Bells. Kristen is badass. Rob is rad, funny and talented. both are great actors and really sexy. They make one damn fine couple.

  21. "Okay, girls, don't you want to BE her? If she is the one who gets this really great guy, wouldn't you want to be imitating her? "

Isn't that the point of the books?
    I think its sick, anyways.
Personally I find her a very weak character with a horrible personality, not someone I would want to be like in the least.

    But for the movies-
People just want their Pattinson eye candy.
No ones watching it for her, even though I agree that she is beautiful shes not asking for attention.
EDWARD SPARKLING CULLEN is the point of the books.

    Oh the chagrin...

  22. I am a proud member of Team Bella and I am a girl. And proud of it. I can relate to her, she's awkward and clumsy and makes mistakes that every girl would make. But she still gets the guy in the end. Bella is the reason I read the Twilight Saga. Yes, Edward is very easy on the eye.. but she is the star of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love kristen.

I have to admit, though, she had to grow on me at first. I didn't appreciate her as much as I do now. But, jealous haters should go watch a few of her other movies before they judge. She's filmed MANY films You shouldn't judge an actress because of one movie. She's an awesome actress, espacially one of her age.

Now, i couldn't picture anyone else as Bella. I think she's more perfect than anyone else for the role. Besides, haters, they couldn't replace her now. Too late. :]

Kristen Stewart is Bella. Deal with it.

  24. To hate an actor for doing his job is plain stupid. Only little fangirls with no own life and lots of complexes can actually hate a person for such reasons. And they can say that there are not jealous like a thousand times, in most cases it will still be true.
Don't like an actor or a character in a move or book is totally normal, but too many people take this whole thing way to serious.
In my case I think Kristen Stewart is not the best choice to play Bella, but I think she does a decent job.
Accept it kids, you will never be Bella and never have Edward as a boyfriend, so please stop embarrasing yourselves...

  25. i think k stew and bella are both AWSOME i like them more than ashly/alice and as for edward i really am not all OME hes hot yes hes sweet yes and rob is really cool and all like really cool but my favorite is jasper/jackson the charicter of jasper is WAY more intoresting and i perfer him and jackson is WAY awsomer if thats a word. so yes kristen stewart she is so pretty and great bella has such an interesting and deep personality. rob is very cool but a little boring, edward iis nice, swwet and hansme yeh but WAY TO boring. but yes Jasper is a charicter i can really know and understand. so as you can tell Bella is my favorite girl in twilight and Jasper is my favorite guy. and this has nothng to do with alice being with jasper ok.

  26. I really dislike Kristen Stewart, but not because I am jealous or because "she has Edward." One, Edward is not real. Two, her acting in Twilight was not great at all. Plus, things that she has said in the media and interviews leads me to believe that she doesn't even really like the Twilight series, or its fans. Maybe I am wrong about that, but that is how she comes off to me. And did anyone see her at the MTV Movie Awards? She was so awkward and, how to put it, not very charismatic. She really just comes off as rude to me. But on her behalf, I did see The Messengers and I really liked that movie and her acting was better. Idk, just my opinion, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Kristen Stewart is a douche! The way she portrayed Bella was awful. It has nothing to do with the writing in Twilight. She hates the movie. Look at how she acted at the MTV awards. If she hates the franchise that Twilight has become, she should quit. There are other actresses who would've done Bella's character some justice. She doesn't put any effort into Twilight and it's sad that she getting rich out of something that she doesn't believe in!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm really glad you posted this! I've kinda felt the same way for a while. I never understood why Kristen wasn't getting as much as attention as Rob. I mean, obviously.. Rob/Edward is gorgeous and every girl is like in love with him, but Bella is the main character throughout the whole thing. There would be no story without her! I personally love Kristen. I've been a fan of hers since I saw Panic Room, because I love Jodi Foster too. So I agree, it should be 50/50. It kinda all comes back to the fact that WE don't get to choose who the actors are, and since I've seen Twilight probably a hundred times by now, I've tried to picture other actresses that could've played Bella's character, but there's no one that sticks out to me. Kristen fits the role of Bella well, and I wish everyone would stop hating on her! So what if she didn't act EXACTLY how Bella did in the book. The book is always going to be different then the movie, so there's really no point in complaining about it! Everyone read the book differently and pictured Bella different, because we are all individuals. Also, if people are seriously judging Kristen for how she talks in interviews or if she's awkward and clumsy on tv, and their relating that or comparing that to Twilight, that is so stupid. That's probably just KRISTEN. Kristen in real life is awkward and clumsy, that has nothing to do with Bella. So that's really dumb for people to be complaining about that. But on another note... I'm super excited for New Moon! :)

  30. I dont hate her but I am soooo hating on her.. ill admit that..lol.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't hate Kristen...I think she's pretty and she does suit the role of Bella when it comes to looks...but what annoys me is that she lacks emotion when it comes to her character. I hope she changes for New Moon but who knows if that will happen.

I also thinks she needs to read (or re-read) the books again so she can grasp the concept. I think once she realizes she needs to act a bit more aggressively she can do an amazing amount of things.

I thought she did a really good jobe expressing her emotions in the movie The Messengers or even Panic Room...why can't she be like that?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think Kristen is an absolute amazing actress to watch and such a role model and I'm 33!!!! She's so intriging to me on screen...screw all the "Kristen haters", jealous much??? If Robert and Kristen ever did get together, I'd be rooting for them all the way. Both gorgeous individuals and wonderful actors, it's only natural.

    ReplyDelete
  33. for all of you saying that Bella was average blah blah blah, Edward only intrested in her for her blood, obviously didn't really read the book. He also liked her for the mystery that she presented to him.. what with being able to read everyone elses mind. She is also a very generous person... how many of you would give up ur life in a place u love to move to a place u hate just so ur Mom could be happy...

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think she's beautiful and a very good choice to play Bella. She has the same laid back, wall flower, clutz vibe in the on screen character that I got from the books. The only thing she could have done less of was flutter her eyes...other wise she's perfect. lol

    ReplyDelete
  35. I loved her as bella!! Nobody else could have played her better and She is stunning in the pics I've seen! She's a normal girl doing a fantastic job, so I'm all for team bella and team Edward!

  39. I did think Kristen looked the part to a T, but honestly all the acting was quite mediocre and over-dramatic. Like watching my HS drama team- which in a way is cool- since it's more realistic as in they are all in HS. I think Taylor Lautner and Jackson Rathbone and Ashely Greene are much better actors.

  40. I LOVE her!! :D she's an amazing actress and she is SOO lucky to play the role of Bella Swan, and she's perfect for it too xD :)

  41. i luv her..i think she looks like a great person, and she can act, u should see her in the horror movie..THE MESSENGER..she was pretty good, completly diff from bella in everyway...i think plp feel dey can portray bella better than her cause deep down dey wana be bella, cause who reality gets dat one guy who will die for u..wait not jus one guy 2 guys, whu would litrally kill themselves if she died..do u ave any guys whu do dat 4 u..NOOOO..

  42. I like Bella. She is adorable in a weird kinda way. KStew totally butchered that role. She is a horrible actress and all I remember from the movie is her annoying spasms. Please... Kstew is very little but a Hollywood child, who has the career she has thanks to Hollywood-big-shot-daddy. Not for her talent. If she was just anybody - you really think she would have gotten that role? Um... No.

  43. I love Kristen Stewart. I think she is a really good actress and I love the character of Bella. But I do think that the script for the film wasn't written in a way to show Bella's better qualities as I prefer her more in the book than in the film =/

    ReplyDelete
  44. i don't hate her either. she's an amazing actress. i love her styles, personality. everything about her is likable to me. i admire kristen. i really look up to her. she's the coolest female teen on earth! hell yeah :-)

  45. The girls who have nothing but bad things to say about Kristen are just jealous. Who wouldn't be? Even in real life. I love her, I think she's awesome. But then again, I'm not a teenager that goes crazy over Rob Pattinson either. I think they are both pretty awesome, as were all of the characters in the movie. I can't wait to see Kristen in the rest of the movies. I'm sure she'll be great! So, stop being jealous and envious and just enjoy the movies. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow...okay...first of all, I do not want to be Bella. That is not my personality at all. I can appreciate Robert Pattinson's acting and the character of Edward Cullen without having to 'equally' like the character of Bella. In the 3rd book in the Twilight Saga, Eclipse, I hated her guts (or Stephenie Meyer's guts for writing her that way, you take your pick). She has the perfect man, and she cannot help falling for the guy who forces himself upon her. I mean...seriously!?! If someone did that to me I would never speak to him again. Soo frustrating...and very out of character for Bella. If she was 'irrevocably in love' with Edward...she would NEVER have fallen for Jacob. People have the right to their own opinion. Just because people pick someone's performance or character apart does NOT mean they want to 'be' like them, or 'have' what they have.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I do agree that the movie was very indie, and not the best. considering how the book took you into the world, the movie was second class. But that's to be expected when people just want to do a movie, and don't expect it to be a feature film. So, the new moon movie, whether you liked twilight or not, will BE better
second, edward, yes he is the ideal guy and every girl will love him. Sure he acts a little differently, but he doesn't stalk her, he can't stay away, and she doesn't want him to. Robert: yes he is attractive, but I don't think people should be sending him vials of their blood and asking him to marry them. You don't know him personally. You have seen him in interviews and on magazines but you really don't know him at all. You think his scruffy hair and dandruff and dirty clothes make him unique, which is true, but you would think that is sick on any other guy, so why is he different. Don't get me wrong, he is hot, but he is an actor in hollywood
And bella, she is the way she is, awkward is the reason edward loved her, if she had been any different, she probably would of ended up with Mike or Jacob. And Kristen, yes she fluttered her eyes and was a bit awkward, but that is how her character should be, the reason it stood out was because the movie was low budget
people should try not to judge the actors by one movie and fall in love with them because they have watched every show with them and read every magazine

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love her acting as bella! She is a great actress!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have been thinking this since I first started hearing those stupid comments...thank you so much for finally putting it into words; I thought I was the only one! I thought she did a perfectly fine job as Bella, and she's absolutely beautiful. When girls fell in love with the books (and with Edward) they imagined themselves as Bella. When an actual person was put into her role (as is inevitable in a movie...) girls hated her for not being them. Thank you!

  50. I don't hate Bella/kristen...i think the character is great and kristen does an amazing job at playing her.
I think the reason a lot of girls post nasty comments is because they are jealous of her..the fact that she's friends with rob...and most of them are young teens who actually think they have a chance with him..lol.

  51. I really love the character of Bella, she shows that an ordinary acident prone girl can have an amazing guy love her. (though she doesnt understand why). Bella also reminds me of myself in her pesonality and clumseynes. I noticed this as I was reading the first book. (I dont want to be her but cant help that Stephanie wrote her in that way) I can relate to the story and also have a man that loves me very much that I am engaged to. I also think that Kristen Stewart does a good job of portraying this character. I also like the chemistry that her and Rob share. It adds to the feeling onscreen between Edward and Bella. I am a huge fan of Twilight and do not want to date Rob or hate Kristen. I think they are both great at portraying the characters. If they end up together in real life more power to them. It doesnt mater what others think about th as ong as they are happy in their own lives. Keep on doing great and I will always be excited to see the next one!

  53. kstew pulled off Bella awesomely. When i read the books i cant picture anyone else playing her. Same goes for rob but im sick of all the girls loving him to death, although im sure he loves the attention. I thought Bella was sometimes very shallow in the books but im not gonna say i hate an actor because of something a fictional character said/did in a book!
    Cmon, TEAM SWITZERLAND!

now, i know some girls out there think, oh yeah. he definatly deserves it. well, i was just reading an article and, boy, i tell you he's like, 'i want THIS kind of water'. then in a restarant he's like, he asked for what he had last night and was mad that the waitress didn't know what he ordered that night! he thought EVERYONE loves him!

  56. I don't want to be like her. And I'm not hating her because she get's Edward. I don't think she was good at playing Bella. Bella in the book you could obviously see that she loved Edward. But Stewart was ice cold. It does not come across on film that she's even interested in Edward. It's not beleivable. She just does not work. But it's too late to change her. So I just sit back and wait to see if she improves in the other movies. To see if she can make it beleivable.

  58. I loved Kristens portrayal of Bella, and tbh prefer it to how Bella was portrayed in the 1st book. As the series progressed Bella grew on me more and more (I'm assuming this correlated with Stephenie Meyer's writing improving with every book)but I still find her to be a bit too whiny and repetitive (and yes we know Edward is amazingly gorgeous etcetc, no need to repeat it 50 times in each book...) at times. Kristen managed to avoid making Bella too needy and clingy, instead making her come across as a young woman able to take care of herself. Plus I think Kirsten is beautiful- it's nice with a young actress who is more independent and doesn't look like she's moulded from the same template as most other Hollywood actresses her age...
    Enough the hating :)

  59. i think she is gorgeous. and at first i didnt like her as bella but that was only because i had a image of her in my head from the books. but now i really think it suits her well.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I find Bella codependent and needy but then I also find her brave because she is willing to die for the ones she loves. I haven't read all through New Moon yet but in Twilight she was willing to face James for her mother.

I just don't agree with the reckless behavior, the zombie-like behavior just because a boy isn't up your but 24/7. However, I guess if she did what she should, find a Human boyfriend and do human things well....this story wouldn't be the hit it is.

  62. Even though this post is very old, I just read it and I have to say that I have really liked the Bella character from day one. I also think along the lines of thinking more power to her for snagging Cullen.. And for Kristen snagging Pattinson in real life, if we're being technical here. ; ) I like K. Stewart as an actress, and I really like her as the character Bella. Meyer never set out to make Bella a role model for young girls all over the world to follow in her footsteps and rely on some guy. Her writing, and the movies, were meant for pure entertainment. In reality, many women have gone through horrific break up's and it effed them up in different ways. Just because one woman doesn't understand anothers suffering, doesn't mean a thing. Some women suffer in silence and go on with life, others need to step back and regroup, and get their sh*t together, so to speak.. I, myself, never got over the agony of my divorce, and I am now happily re-married. It happens! The intensity and passion between Bella and Edward is something that many dream of experiencing in their lives, some only dream and nothing more. We all want that passion on some level, and Meyer's work provides a way to experience it through the eyes of a fictional character. Just as she was quoted as saying: "Everyone should be able to find that book that does it for them." Twilight certainly did it for me. : )
