StephieBear, Devil's Advocate: Should Bella Have Dumped Edward?

Should Bella have dumped Edward?

There are many people, including Dr. Phil, who believe that the story of Bella and Edward are a bad influence on today's young people. I was watching Dr. Phil one day and he said he found it disturbing that Edward sneaks into Bella's room and she willingly allows him to do so.

Soon after The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was released, there were stories all over the web and news about teens biting one another as if they were a vampire. Rob Pattinson was even joking about it on Dave Letterman.

Young people often take stories and movies for real life. Vampires and werewolves are mythical creatures, who do not exist, but some teenagers take it very seriously. Is Twilight too mature for teenagers and at what age should children be allowed to read the book and see the movies? If you were to go into a church, many would say never. The simple fact is that many skeptics believe Twilight is for adults, when we can separate fact from fiction.

  1. it's bull shit. It just a story we all love. I just like the story because of it. it's something else. Bella shouln't dump Edward, because of something like that. he is just strange and she wants him to be there.

  2. If it was reality, I would have dumped Edward because of all the control freak issues. (By the way, I'm 100% Team Edward). I wouldn't have even given Jacob a second glance because he's immature. However, that's "reality." In Fantasy land, I would have told Edward to chill out and hitch that leg (Wait, that might be reality as well).

Now, as a Twi-Mom and former teacher (I'm only 31, not THAT old) I would say the appropriate age for this book is 16 and up, perhaps not for the steamy/teasing content, but for the emotional ride. Your sophomore year of high school is when you really start going through the love/emotion/fairytale relationship rollercoaster, I think that age would not only appreciate the novels more than someone younger, but perhaps be more equipt to decipher what is acceptable for a vampire/werewolf threesome compared to what is not acceptable to us mere mortals.

  7. i do believe people can take things to far and think its more reality then a fiction , but doctors and experts forget that fictional worlds can be good to exercise the mind ,true if real life edward would been dumped and police called a guy stalking reading minds would be placed in a looney bin .
but its fiction a love story so people want to relate to a more positive outlook ,teens dont have an easy life anymore there expected to grow up so fast with out living out there childhood
but teens also need to know some things can be taken too far !!

  9. Hmmm, this is hard. During New Moon, I was so impressed with Jacob, he became like a man and the right person for Bella while she was going through that hard time. BUT...
Edward and Bella were just meant to be together, the story is a true testimony on what love is (obvisly nt the vampire thing lol). Extreme highs and devestating lows and sticking together through everything. As team Jacob, I could rant on why Jacob is a better match for Bella, but it just comes down one thing that will always be against him...hes not Edward :)

  10. For all those who would let down their hair, or trade the cow for beans, or trek through the woods to grandma's house I say, I would never have dumped Edward! I would have taken Edward over Jacob! I would have been swept off my feet. Edward was protective, mysterious and magical and love sick. Jacob was jealous and manipulative. He was a frustrated love sick virgin. And he sparkles… what more could a girl want. He was the perfect prince charming.. All that was missing was the white horse, oh yea he could out run it anyway…

    And this is from a TwiHag… or 60 something….

  12. Dr. Phill is blowing this out of proportion. This is fiction, not real life. And Stephanie Meyer wrote the book for her and her friends, not for teens. Bella should not have broken up with Edward because she never wanted to...so why would she have done something she didn't want to do? That's just my take on it.

  16. Dr. Phil is full of himself. Plenty of adults are getting caught up in the whole vampire, biting thing. That has been going on for a long time, too, not just since the Twilight books came out. There will always be people who cannot separate fantasy from reality.

I think the Twilight saga appeals to people of all ages because Edward, while being made Vampire at the tender age of 17, really isn't 17 at all. He's been around for more than hundred years, so he has the maturity and knowledge way beyond that of any teen or most adults for that matter. Bella, while being only 17, is really going on 35, because she always had to be the adult in the mother/daughter relationship. The books also promote chivalry, honor, trust, devotion and love that goes deeper than just that associated with the physical. Those are good lessons for anyone of any age. I don't get why these books are a bad influence on teens. I love them and it's been 33 years since I was 17.

  17. My names Clara Molloy, im 16 and from the UK...
I personally, am able to see both sides of this argument... I love Twilight, but some scenes i wouldn't let my niece watch, especially the trailer of Breaking Dawn, because of the sexual scenes..However if these scenes wern't in the movie, we wouldn;t be able to grasp the relationship they have. He goes into her room, to watch her sleep..Only because he cares for her, and wants to watch over her to make sure she is safe. Not because he is sexually attracted to watching her sleep. I think it's pathetic about the '' kids biting other kids''thing.. Some children, just take it too far, and become too ROBsessed, i guess.. But if parents and so on, disagree with all of this, don't let your child watch it..Turn off the television, and stop moaning!!!! Twilight is brilliant, it's not usually the type of thing i would watch, but its brilliant... It shows young people the other side of a relationship..Its not all about sex, its about caring, loving, spending time with each other, and realising you have alot of decisions as a young person!!!! :D :D xxxx

  19. I completely agree wid u debramary123. Edward & Bella are meant to be with each other. And if some people are behaving weirdly thats their problem,it is not at all the efect of Twilight. Twilight not only helps us to feel the love that exists but also make us aware of our responsibilities & decicsions. :)
