This weeks topic is the pros and cons of Christians reading The Twilight Saga. Being Devil's Advocate, I have to start with the cons:
The story of Twilight, is based upon the supernatural. In traditional vampire stories, the person who was bitten by the vampire, their soul was replaced by an evil demon. They gave up their purity for evil. The Cullens are animal-like, even though they are not considered to be evil.
Another objection is Alice seeing the future. In Deuteronomy 18: 10-12, the Bible talks about how seeing the future is an "abomination to the Lord." Bella's desire to want to spend eternity with Edward is also disconcerting. Christians are the opposite and want to spend eternity with Jesus and live forever with Him in the kingdom of Heaven. As I have brought up before, some parents are concerned with the fact that Edward spends every night in Bella's room, watching her sleep, like a stalker.
Onto the pros, Edward does talk Bella into waiting until marriage before they do the deed. Of course, not every Christian waits until marriage, but the Bible clearly states that is what His followers are to do. Also, Carlisle was raised by a pastor and became one himself before he was turned into a vampire. He shows extraordinary faith, even after he becomes something he doesn't want to be. He makes the best of it and that is what Christians try to do when their life is not going as planned.
When Bella becomes pregnant, she does not have an abortion, even though she knows it may kill her. This part of the story appeals to many Christians, in that she does not give up the baby, but fights for her, even though Reneesme is killing her.
I did not expect these books to have a Christian message - and that's fine. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Twilight books do reflect many Christian-like values and themes - whether intentional or not.

ReplyDeleteThis post really makes me angry for a variety of reasons. First is that you totally plagiarized this article from about.com. Secondly, that article has a lot of facts screwed up, uncited, unproven and just plain wrong.
ReplyDeleteBeyond that, you confuse real, traditional vampire myths with SM's books and Buffy. Read a Montague Summers book and you'll see (like Bella did with a quick Google) that vampire legends from all over the world vary widely in how vampirism occurs, what they do, what harms them, etc. None of the stories really involve exchanging the soul for immortality or demons.
As far as the Bible and Alice go, read 1st Corinthians. Alice is more of a prophet than a fortune teller who communes with spirits.
The Bible not only condones and sanctions the gifts of foreknowledge and foresight, which it calls by its ancient name, prophecy, but actually encourages its use as emphasized by the Apostle Paul when he said," Pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy." (1 Cr 14:1)
As far as "abominations" go, you have to dig a little deeper and see that many times Christians cherry-pick the Bible and hold some things up as abominations and ignore the other things that we all do every day, like using credit cards. Charging or paying interest are abominations. According to Psalms 15:1-5 and Jeremiah 15:10. Ever had a conversation with a woman during her menstrual cycle? According to Leviticus 18:19, that's an abomination. Ever wear your boyfriend's jacket or maybe borrow a sweater of your dad's? According to Deuteronomy 22:5, that's an abomination. Shrimp. Tattoos. Reading your horoscope. Shaving. All abominations. Deuteronomy 22:11 forbids wearing a material made of wool and linen, but Leviticus 19:19 says it's an abomination to wear any blended material, period. So all those poly/cotton blend tee shirts in your dresser are all abominations.
On to your pros. Premarital sex and the traditional opposition to it in the Bible come more from a concern about money, inheritances and property rights. If you read the Bible closely, you'll find many of it's "stars" have multiple wives and mistresses.

First of all I didn't plagarize this from anywhere, I re-worded it. I got my ideas from about.com. That's all. Yeah, the Bible does have characters with multiple wives and such, but this is not about them, it is about God's point of view!

It's really annoying and kinda puts a bad taste in my mouth, being that I'm not Christian. I understand this was just a make you think kinda of post and I'm not mad about it, I just don't agree. That's my opinion :)

Meh.. I am a Christian and I love twilight! My church m8s do aswell. I would only not read them if it didint sit right with my spirit. Made me a lil mad reading the opening comment, but i still love and follow ths blog ♥
